Picture a courtroom setting with a
murder trail under way. A very clever defense lawyer, trying to get his
guilty client off the hook, is in the process of interrogating the Medical
Examiner.
“And did you perform the autopsy on the
alleged victim in this case?” asked the lawyer.
“Yes I did,” responded the doctor.
“And was he dead at the time?”
“Of course he was.”
“And how did you determine that?”
“Well, the man had no pulse and no
respiration.”
“But did you actually perform any
specific tests to determine that he was, in fact, dead as you claim?”
“No,” admitted the doctor, “I didn’t
think it was necessary because his brain was in a jar on my desk.”
“But,” pressed the attorney, “the
question is: can you testify beyond a reasonable doubt that the man was
actually dead?”
“Well,” allowed the doctor, “I suppose there’s always a
possibility that he was out practicing law somewhere.”
